Swimming Safely

Swimming Pool Users Safety Code - Please read before your visit.

At Catterick Leisure Centre, we want you to enjoy your swimming safely; please follow the guidance in this Safety Code along with any advice given to you by our Pool Staff.
Spot the dangers: Take care, swimming pools can be hazardous.  Water presents a risk of drowning, and injuries can occur from hitting the hard surrounds, or from misuse of the equipment; every pool is different, so always make sure you know how deep the water is and check for other hazards such as steep slopes into deep water. Always swim within your ability: Never swim after a heavy meal or after alcohol; avoid holding your breath and swimming long distances underwater; be especially careful if you have a medical condition such as epilepsy, asthma, diabetes or heart problems; follow advice provided for the safety of yourself and others; avoid unruly behaviour; always do what the Pool Staff ask you. Look out for yourself and other swimmers Keep an eye open for others, particularly younger children and non-swimmers ‘learn how to help’ if you see somebody in difficulty, call for help immediately; in an emergency, keep calm and do exactly as you are told.

Swimming with Children

In line with guidance from the Institute for Sport and Recreation Management (ISRM) and following comprehensive risk assessment, a responsible adult must accompany children under the age of 8 using any of our swimming pools.  All of our sessions, including fun sessions and Starz Pool parties, operate on a 2 children to 1 adult ratio for all children under the age of 8. We recommend that children under the age of 4 are accompanied on a 1 to 1 basis and that all non-swimmers stay within their own depth and wear BSI approved armbands.  We would also remind you that it is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to maintain a constant watch on all children in their care and to remain in close contact with any non-swimmers and all children under the age of 8. Children aged 8 years and upwards are not permitted in Changing Rooms for the opposite sex.
