Swim Starz Parent’s Guide
Swim Starz follows the Amateur Swimming Association’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS). The NPTS takes each child on a journey through aquatics, starting with the foundation stage and awards. Foundation is a programme for developing early years water confidence through accompanied lessons and school sessions with an emphasis on the development of basic motor skills and fun and games. Foundation awards are centred on the Swim-a-Song and Duckling badges and certificates.
The main stage of the NPTS takes young swimmers through the fundamental movement skills – stages 1 to 7 of the scheme:
Stage 1 develops basic safety awareness, the ‘class’ scenario, basic movement skills and water confidence skills
Stage 2 progresses to safe entries to the water, basic floating, travel and rotation.
Stage 3 sees swimmers start to develop propulsive skills on the front and back and improve water safety knowledge
Stage 4 develops understanding of buoyancy and starts to refine stroke technique
Stage 5 improves water based skills and further develops stroke technique
Stage 6 sees the introduction of coordinated breathing and understanding of preparation for exercise
Stage 7 refines skills and technical ability in preparation for your child’s move into the pre-competitive Aquatic disciplines.
The rate at which each child progresses through the programme will vary according to a variety of factors including age and attendance. But with our exceptional teachers and variety of complementary awards, we will keep your child happy, stimulated and content in a safe and fun environment.
